The interviews

Olympic Games Barcelona 92 were very important for Spain but since we were not able to be there, we asked to two people, Federico in Barcelona and Jesús in Madrid to tell us about it.

The aim of this text is to show and describe the results of the interviews that we did to our narrators.

Firstly, we will present what the narrators told us about the changes in the security measures, the information in the media, the attitude of people towards sport and the event, internationalization of Barcelona or any changes and interesting facts that they remembered. Then, we will analyse this information and, finally, compare the differences and similarities between the perceptions, opinions and experiences of our narrators during the Olympics.

According to the first topic, the security measures, Federico told us there were lots of security guards to avoid any terrorist problem as it has happened in other Olympics, for example Montreal. He also praised the work of volunteers who helped in the organization and who "became into a living example for the next Olympics". Jesús explained us that some neighbourhoods were rehabilitated in order to eliminate certain problems such as drugs, robberies, etc, "There were some shifts relocation of certain neighborhoods because they were going to build be Olympic area". He also agreed that because of this global event there were many security guards. As we can see both of them coincide that the security measures were very important in Barcelona as well in Madrid.

Related to the information in the media, Federico and Jesús said that Olympics Games were shown all day long, explaining the Spanish medals and records, the inauguration of stadiums, the intro of the Olympics… in their own words; "It was  continuous centre of attention in the TV, radio, newspapers...". Jesús also told us that the AVE launching began in those days.

When they were asked about the attitude of people they both agreed that population in Spain got more interested in different sports and started practicing them in a more natural way. This was because Spanish athletes were doing it very well and people were very enthusiastic. "Sport began to be a more ordinary thing to do", Federico said and Jesús also told us "People became interested in sports had never seen, such as athletics, thanks to the triumphs of our athletes"

There were many international visitors according to our interviewees but  mostly concentrated in Barcelona, which became into “the city of the World”, as Federico said. Besides many foreigners came to live to Barcelona. On the other hand Jesus, in Madrid, did not notice the presence of too many international visitors.

Finally, we asked them to tell us about any personal experience or opinion that they had, apart from the questions we had done before. Jesús explained "as a curiosity at work level, in the device of gas it was burning in the Olympic torch, one of the teams that regulated gas inlet was the company where I work". On the other hand, Federico said that he noticed a huge change in the city of Barcelona, it was “a New Barcelona”, where the Olympic Harbour was built up from a problematic and poor neighbourhood, new roads and streets were established, such as the “Cinturón de Ronda”, and the construction of the Tividavo’s tunnel was finished after more than 20 years. It is curious that our narrators both agreed that the inauguration of the Olympics with Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé was amazing and astonishing; "Two worlds, modern and classic, came together for this event".
