Spain in the early 90’s
In 1982 Felipe González was chosen as the President of Spain and he was re-elected in 1986 and 1989. So during the Olympic Games in Barcelona ’92 he was still the President.
1992 was a very special and international year for Spain. Apart from the Olympics, it was also celebrated an International Exposition in Seville. And Madrid was named as European Capital of Culture.
These three international events helped to maintain the economy in a more or less stable way. Millions of pesetas were invested in big constructions such as the train of high speed (in Spanish Alta Velocidad Española; AVE), which was opened that year from Madrid to Seville. But despite all this money was spent on improving the Spanish infrastructures, there was a high unemployment rate (more than 20%).
Barcelona's evolution
Barcelona is a beautiful city in the North-East coast of Spain. Very important due to the relevance of its art, culture, geographical situation, harbour… It was selected in 1986 as the Olympic City for 1992 and during those six years, it was embellished and prepared to welcome all the people that would come for such an important event.
Many buildings were restored and repaired, some others were built to obtain new and wonderful places to practice sports, go for a walk, etc. New roads and streets were created and the subway system was remodelled.
All of these changes, which implied huge amounts of money invested, made this city become into one of the most modern, visited and international cities in Spain. After all of them, it was ready to welcome the Olympic Games in July 1992.
